Monday, October 4

On Monday, registering more than 4700 miles thus far on the odometer, we entered Virginia. On back roads, we encountered myriads of historical markers along the road as well as multiple signs for nearby plantations. Mixed forests showing the first signs of fall color alternated with cultivated fields.

Driving northeast across the state, we arrived at Williamsburg by early afternoon. First stop was the visitors center to view a film setting us in the revolutionary period. We then began our explorations with a tour of the British Governor’s Palace, furnished as the home of Lord Dunmore the last British governor of the colony of Virginia.

After the tour, we caught several of the live costumed presentations in different areas of the town--the Marquis de Lafayette galloping in on horseback with news of the victory at Yorktown, Martha Washington arriving by carriage, a black slave Baptist minister announcing his approval by the Baptist association, Washington’s speech proclaiming that he would not run for a third term of the presidency. The day was increasingly cold and windy so we headed back to our hotel. In looking for an RV park, we had discovered that we could get a reasonable hotel room in Williamsburg for only $10 more than camping overnight in any RV park!! OK!
